Duc Giang General Hospital (Hanoi) has just successfully rescued a female worker who suffered severe multiple injuries after falling into an elevator shaft at a construction site.
The patient is Mrs. T. (66 years old), who was admitted to the hospital for emergency treatment on the morning of August 1. Previously, while working, she unfortunately fell from the 3rd floor to the ground through the elevator shaft.
Upon admission, the patient was in a state of hypovolemic shock, directly threatening her life.

Through examination, doctors determined that Mrs. T. had fractures in nearly 10 ribs on both sides, pulmonary contusion, a fractured lower jaw, a fractured and dislocated left shoulder joint, a fractured pelvis, along with multiple other associated injuries.
The most concerning issue was the contusion and bleeding of the internal iliac artery.
This is a source of bleeding located deep within the pelvic cavity, which is difficult to detect but can cause massive blood loss and quickly lead to a critical condition if not managed promptly.
Immediately upon receiving the patient, Duc Giang General Hospital activated the red alert protocol and organized a multidisciplinary consultation to devise an emergency treatment plan.
The surgery lasted 160 minutes, involving 3 surgical specialties along with an anesthesia and resuscitation team.
Thanks to the urgent coordination between specialties, Mrs. T. was saved.
By the evening of August 1, the patient had overcome the critical period, and her vital signs were preserved. The patient continued to be monitored and received intensive treatment at the hospital.
This incident once again highlights the importance of ensuring occupational safety in areas such as elevator shafts.
To prevent accidents, construction units must strictly implement safety measures such as covering elevator shaft openings, installing barriers and warning signs, providing adequate personal protective equipment, and regularly training and supervising workers during their tasks.
