EM - Social media in recent days has been "stirred up" by a video recording a woman riding a motorcycle straight onto an escalator. The scene, seemingly only found in action movies, left viewers holding their breath as they followed every second, while also raising major questions about safety awareness in public spaces.

Based on the footage in the video, it is unclear why the woman chose to transport her motorbike via the escalator. The scene shows her struggling to control the vehicle, appearing quite strenuous and fraught with danger as the wheels constantly wobbled on the moving steps.

Despite this, the woman remained determined to proceed. Every passing second caused viewers to hold their breath, as even a minor slip could have led to a serious accident. Fortunately, she eventually managed to get the vehicle to the upper floor safely.

However, this reckless action quickly caused a stir among the online community. Many expressed confusion, asking: "Why would she take such a risk?" or "If she wants to go down, does she plan to ride the motorbike down the escalator as well?" Many opinions suggested that this was a behavior that disregarded personal safety and could endanger others. It remains unclear when and where the incident took place.

Potential risks when using escalators

Escalators are designed for pedestrians, commonly found in shopping malls, train stations, or airports. However, just a moment of carelessness can lead to accidents. According to safety experts, the majority of incidents occur when users are negligent—misstepping, falling, or having clothes, shoelaces, or handbags caught in the escalator's gaps.

75% of escalator accidents are caused by falls, and nearly 20% are due to entrapment of clothing, footwear, or bags. A large proportion of these accidents involve the elderly and children, including a small percentage of playful children who do not step off the escalator but keep their feet at the final landing, leading to entrapment in the mechanism or climbing on handrails.

Causes due to technical equipment malfunctions still exist; however, the rate is much lower than causes stemming from user behavior.

Ensuring escalator safety

To ensure safety when using escalators, users need to carefully observe the direction of travel before stepping on, stand straight in the middle of the step, face forward, and hold the handrail firmly throughout the ride. Absolutely do not walk, run, or stand close to the edge of the steps; meanwhile, tie shoelaces neatly, adjust clothing, and keep handbags tidy to avoid being pulled into moving gaps.

When the escalator stops at the end point, step off immediately to avoid causing congestion for those behind. In the event of an incident, users can press the emergency stop button located at both ends of the escalator. For the elderly, young children, or those carrying bulky items, using the elevator is always the safer and more suitable choice.

Remember to observe instructions to ensure safety for yourself and others; absolutely do not bring strollers or heavy cargo boxes onto the escalator to ensure safety for yourself and those around you.

When preparing to enter the escalator: observe the direction indicator lights attached to both ends of the escalator to enter the correct entrance.

Face forward and hold the handrail before entering and stepping onto the moving escalator steps. When stepping on, pay attention to stepping into the space between two steps, not on the horizontal demarcation line on the escalator, as this is the folding line that forms two steps; standing there when the escalator moves makes it easy to fall.

While standing on the step, passengers should stand with both feet on the same step, not straddling two different steps. When standing, note not to stand too close to the edge of the escalator to avoid shoes or sandals getting caught in the side of the escalator.

Running, teasing each other, or sitting on the escalator handrail is not permitted. Note to stand on the right side of the escalator to ensure no obstruction to other passengers walking.

Adults should hold hands and place children in the middle of the escalator step. Children under 6 years old are best carried to ensure safety.

If wearing clothes or skirts with a wide flare, pay attention to the outfit. Many elevator accidents occur because clothes get caught under the conveyor belt. Use the handrail correctly; do not lean your back against the handrail, turn sideways, or turn around to the back—to avoid losing balance and to handle incidents in a timely manner.
