The deployment of US troops to South Vietnam in the 1960s brought about significant socio-economic shifts and changes to urban technical infrastructure, particularly in Saigon. It was during this period and in this specific location that high-rise architecture was first introduced to Vietnam.

Prominent examples include the President Hotel (now the 727 Tran Hung Dao Apartment Building, District 5), the Palace Hotel, the Caravelle Hotel, and Cho Ray Hospital. Most high-rise buildings during this era were designed by Vietnamese architects. Although they possessed modest heights—peaking at around 14 to 15 stories—they marked the definitive emergence of high-rise architecture in Vietnam.

In the capital city of Hanoi, prior to 1954, the tallest building stood at just 7 stories (the area of the old Nhan Dan Newspaper printing house on Trang Tien Street). Before 1986, the 11-story Hanoi Hotel (formerly Thang Long Hotel) was constructed.

Since the 1990s, the "Doi Moi" (Renovation) policy, which called for foreign investment alongside economic growth, created favorable conditions to accelerate high-rise construction in Vietnam's major urban centers. The rapid development of this architectural typology has transformed the urban landscape nationwide, beginning in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City before spreading to numerous other provinces and cities.

Today, marking 80 years of independence and 50 years of reunification, the nation has demonstrated powerful development with over 900 buildings standing 100 meters or taller that have been completed or topped out (excluding antenna towers, religious structures, etc.). Among these are numerous skyscrapers ranging from 200 to 460 meters in height. These structures are not merely architectural icons but also testaments to the country's extraordinary progress.
