By 2025, Hanoi will have about 1.3 million cars and this number will increase to 1.7 million cars by 2030. Meanwhile, the city’s current number of static parking spots can hardly be met this strong growth demand. But the answer to the difficult problem is entirely possible if elevator technology is used for smart parking spots.
Car parking – sounds simple at first, but it’s not easy, especially in urban areas and big cities. The system of outdoor parking lots and underground parking lots has also become overloaded. Therefore, the implementation of high-rise parking projects is very important for urban traffic in the capital.
“Breaking battle” parking spot
According to the Hanoi Department of Transport, there are about 6.9 million vehicles in the capital city (cars, motorbikes), not to mention the number of foreign vehicles entering and leaving the city every day. Estimated, with the motorcycle growth rate of more than 7.6%/year; automobiles 16.1%/year, by 2025, Hanoi will have about 1.3 million cars and 7.3 million motorbikes; By 2030, there will be about 1.7 million cars and 7.7 million motorbikes. The rapid development of vehicles has made the need for parking more and more urgent, while the current static transportation system (parking lots, public parking spots) is too lacking and weak.
Parking for cars in big cities is very difficult when demand exceeds supply many times
The greater the number of vehicles participating in traffic, the greater the demand for parking spots. However, the land area for static traffic only accounts for a very small proportion of the land fund for urban construction and urban land. These land funds can only meet 25 – 30% of the number of vehicles operating in the area.
If the increase in the number of cars continues as it is now, in the not too distant future, Hanoi will “break the battle” in terms of parking spots.
Which solution?
In the face of the huge increase in the number of cars in urban areas, an urgent issue for most managers is how to maximize the parking capacity on a given area? With land fund in big cities increasingly limited, increasing the area is very expensive, takes a long time and is often not feasible. In such a situation, smart parking spots, multi-storey, making the most of space have been tested in Vietnam.
Basically, the car parking system commonly used in Vietnam is a mechanical system, which has many outstanding advantages and is divided into two types.
The first is a vertical rotating high-rise parking system. If the land area is only enough to park for 2 positions, when using the automatic vertical parking system, the capacity can be increased to 16 seats. This system is used quite commonly in Hanoi and Da Nang.

The second type is the high-rise parking system in the form of a puzzle. This is a semi-automatic parking solution with many advantages such as cost savings, easy construction, flexibility in disassembly, suitable for many different areas and terrains.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tu, in charge of parking spot 32 Nguyen Cong Tru, said that this smart parking spot is equipped with the AJ automatic parking system of the Korean manufacturer. With a limited area of just over 100m2, the system can accommodate a total of 30 cars, including 24 4-seat cars and 6 7-seat cars. As a rough estimate, the system generated at least 5 times more capacity than a stationary car park on the same area.
AJ automatic parking system uses a vertical lift to bring cars to the stack, which is very suitable for installation in underground floors with a number of thousands of vehicles. Sending and picking up the car is also very flexible at the push of a button on the dashboard. On average, it takes about 2-3 minutes to send or receive a vehicle at this smart car parking spot.

Another high-rise parking lot installed on Nguyen Cong Hoan street also uses a vertical rotation system consisting of 17 blocks of 4-storey steel truss that can accommodate up to 221 vehicles.

In essence, the “heart of the system” above-mentioned parking is the special elevators installed inside them. The elevator will do the job of lifting the cars, rotating on a vertical axis, creating a smart parking place in a narrow space. Car pallets (car lift racks) are hung on 2 conveyor chains and move on chains. On the pallet frame, there is a guide roller to balance the pallet in motion. The system uses only one actuator (a type of motor used to move or control a mechanism or system).
Looking out to the world
The potential assessment shows that the global smart parking solutions market size and revenue is expected to grow from over US$4.4 billion in 2022 to US$30.84 billion in 2032.
Automakers are looking to ease the growing burden of global traffic by deploying solutions that support Internet of Things (IoT) and smart parking (including parking)). Among the technologies used to implement effective solutions are data analytics, advanced sensors, smart parking meters and mobile applications for online booking and payment.
The US smart parking market is expected to have a very high growth rate due to the increasing urbanization rate and strong auto industry. Accordingly, due to the presence of many multinational technology companies, open government regulations and financial support, the US has become the world’s largest market for smart parking. Extremely heavy traffic in major cities such as New York, Los Angeles and others, along with a growing appreciation of traffic control and parking, has fueled the growth of the parking market in the US.

In Germany, many investment solutions for construction and parking management have been implemented, reducing the time to find a parking space and reducing traffic congestion. Factors such as an increase in the number of vehicles, government initiatives and plans to build smart cities, are expected to contribute to a significant growth in the number of smart parking spots in Germany in next decade. Accordingly, the German smart parking solutions market is expected to grow by 16% in the period from 2022 to 2032.
In the near future, automated valet parking systems that use a combination of technologies to assist vehicle owners in finding a suitable parking space will become commonplace. According to the latest calculations, smart parking solutions will see a growth of nearly 10% in 2022 alone compared to 2021.
Solving problems arising from traffic is of concern to the whole world. The dominance of smart technology is driving the development of smart parking solutions that started with elevated parking on a global scale. But no matter what technology is applied, the role of the elevator in the solution is core. It is the “heart” in the solution to solve the parking bottleneck, one of the most difficult problems of urban traffic worldwide.
That also proves one thing, the operating range of the elevator is not small. It is not limited to just lifting people and lifting goods in buildings. It also has flexible and diverse applications in many other fields. Therefore, the elevator manufacturing industry will have a very large space and that is an opportunity for businesses that have been, are and will join this playground!
