EM – The PALEA/VNEA Lift and Escalator Seminar held on 5 October 2023 is assessed as a good opportunity for Viet Nam and other countries in the region to absorb international experience in building elevator safety standards and codes, gradually improve the system of regulations and standards.
On the morning of October 5, the PALEA/VNEA Lift and Escalator Seminar occurred in Hanoi. This seminar was organized by the Pacific Asia Lift and Escalator Association (PALEA) and the Vietnam Elevator Association (VNEA). It is the first time a Vietnamese representative, the VNEA, has come forward and hosted the international elevator information seminar.
The PALEA/VNEA Lift and Escalator Seminar had the participation of many state agencies, associations, and enterprises related to elevators and escalators in Vietnam and abroad.
Speaking at the opening Deputy Minister of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs Le Van Thanh hoped that the seminar would not only be a premise for building and completing the elevator regulations and standards but also strengthen the cooperation among countries in the Asia Pacific.
Deputy Minister of Labor – Invalids and Social Affairs also kindly suggested that VNEA have proposals and initiatives to cooperate with PALEA to build elevator safety regulations and standards; to improve safety testing capability; and to build the database on elevators in Vietnam.
“Occupational Safety Department of MOLISA researches and gets more international experiences to complete national technical regulations and improve state management capability to gradually help the Vietnam elevator market more transparent, and bring safety, quality, and comfort to Vietnamese users”, Deputy Le Van Thanh added.
Deputy Le Van Thanh emphasized: “PALEA selected Vietnam for the Seminar this year, with the participation of the VNEA. That affirms the efforts of Vietnam in general and VNEA in particular, in promoting development opportunities and international integration for the Vietnamese elevator industry. It also shows that the Vietnamese Government cares much about the development of Vietnam’s elevator industry now and in the future”.
Sharing at the conference, Mr. Graham Worthington – President of PALEA, said that one of PALEA’s objectives was to harmonize elevator and escalator standards and codes also the conformity assessment process in the Asia Pacific region.
The association regularly holds information seminars in various Asia Pacific centers to inform local members and interested industry representatives of the latest trends in regional and international codes and standards.
Mr. Graham Worthington – President of PALEA introduced the program and gave a welcome speech.
“Through the harmonization of codes and standards across the region, the association strives to reduce the negative effects of different technical requirements on the safety, design, production, and installation of elevator and escalator products. Increasing mobility of installation and maintenance crews demands that codes and standards be harmonized to ensure the safety of these personnel by reducing variation in elevator safety devices, clearances, procedures, and processes”, the President of PALEA added.
Assessing the successes of the PALEA/VNEA seminar, the Chairman of VNEA – Nguyen Hai Duc said that this was a great opportunity for the Vietnam elevator industry to exchange and connect with elevator enterprises and associations locally and internationally. Striving for a further goal is to increase international cooperation with developed countries in science and technology work and human resource training in the elevator industry.

The Chairman of VNEA shared that, under the theme of “ The Lift Codes and Safety” and presentations, discussions from elevator experts, the VNEA and management agencies, enterprises also have an overview of the construction of international elevator safety regulations and standards as well as building a database for the elevator industry.
“Through the seminar, the VNEA and the Vietnam Institute of Lift Engineering Application (VILEA) received many contributions and shares from domestic and foreign experts in building the Base Standards for the Vietnam elevator industry – TCCS/VILEA, which VNEA led and assigned to VILEA for construction”, Mr. Nguyen Hai Duc added.
The PALEA/VNEA Seminar was attended by leading elevator experts in the region and internationally to present and share the latest research on urgent issues of the elevator industry in the region and globally.
The main topics focused at the seminar include initiatives to contribute and to complete the elevator safety codes and standards in the region as well as internationally; and urgent issues related to existing lifts and escalators and solutions for maintenance and modernization.
The overall objective is to improve the safety of the elevator industry; and to harmonize the global elevator standards and standards towards “Global Trade Barrier Free Technology”, promoting the success of sustainable development and unlocking green growth for the elevator industry.
The representatives of many Vietnam elevator enterprises, such as Pacific, Hisa, TK Elevator, ALPEC, Tan Lap, iTek, Mekamic, Van Su Loi,… were invited. Besides domestic elevator enterprises, the seminar also had the participation of representatives of foreign elevator enterprises in Vietnam: Schindler Vietnam, KONE Vietnam, Hitachi Vietnam, Mitsubishi Vietnam, and Otis Vietnam,…
