EM – After an extensive period of research and development, the Vietnam Elevator Association (VNEA) has officially released the Elevator Industry Dictionary. This landmark publication marks a significant step forward for the industry, promoting standardization and consistency in elevator operations while offering many practical benefits.
The Imperative Need for an “Elevator Industry Dictionary”
Within the elevator industry, a significant portion of the terminology, component names, equipment designations, and technical procedures originate from foreign languages. While some common technical terms have been adopted into Vietnamese, the majority remain relatively new and are often translated using “Vietlish” (a playful term used to describe a mix of Vietnamese and English) or directly from English.
Consequently, the naming of components and equipment remains inconsistent, with each company and individual within the elevator industry employing their own unique terminology. This has led to numerous instances of misunderstandings and misinterpretations, resulting in economic losses, reduced work efficiency, and other detrimental consequences.
For instance, a simple online search for the term “guide shoes” reveals a multitude of inconsistent Vietnamese and English translations.
The introduction of an Elevator Industry Dictionary would undoubtedly serve as an invaluable tool for manufacturing, business operations, management, and training within the elevator sector. By establishing a standardized language, this dictionary would contribute to a more efficient, safe, and globally aligned Vietnamese elevator industry.
Recognizing the necessity of having an industry dictionary to support business management in the industry 4.0 era – everything must be standardized for digitalization, to help the domestic and international business ecosystem to connect seamlessly, without misunderstandings or waste.
Furthermore, the dictionary serves as a cornerstone for standardizing training materials for elevator technicians in Vietnam, equipping them with the necessary foundation to compete in the global labor market.
During the compilation process, the editorial board adhered strictly to two national technical regulations (QCVNs) and 32 national standards (TCVNs) pertaining to the elevator industry, as well as international references. This meticulous approach ensures the dictionary’s adherence to the principles of legality, consistency, and widespread applicability.
Requirements for an Elevator Industry Dictionary
Due to its important role and wide application in practice, the elevator industry dictionary needs to ensure the following criteria
– High professionalism: The elevator industry dictionary needs to provide industry-specific terminology and concepts that accurately reflect the essence of the technical objects in the elevator field.
– Comprehensive and clear definitions: The concepts and terms in the elevator industry dictionary need to be defined in detail and scientifically, so that readers can clearly understand the function, structure, and role of each component and device.
– Visual interpretation: Elevators are a complex mechanical system, so the interpretation of its components needs to be supplemented with images and diagrams to visually illustrate and help users better understand the use of terminology in specific contexts.
– Regular updates: Elevator technology is continuously evolving, from mechanical control to electronic control, and then to AI-based control, leading to the constant emergence of new elevator-related terminology and objects. Therefore, the elevator industry dictionary needs to be updated regularly to accurately and promptly reflect these developments.
Based on that, the Vietnam Institute of Lift Engineering Application has gradually finalized the content of the Vietnamese elevator dictionary called “Elevator Industry Dictionary”.
